As
the title of my book says, my book contains sirens and I feel I need to explain
what my version of a siren is.
From
what I have researched, there are two types of mythical sirens; the ‘evil’
mermaid type and the half-bird, half-woman type, I took inspiration from the
latter. In my book’s universe, sirens are exclusively female (though my main
character, Stefan, is an exception to that rule) and they are, for the most
part, immortal.
The
general consensus is that sirens are attractive to humans and use their voices
to lure humans to their deaths. I stick to those two points (though I do
something different in regards to the death thing but I’ll get back to that).
Of
course, I put my own spin on the sirens, for example:
The
tendrils that I briefly mentioned are a core part of what makes them different
and not just visually. Because of their long hair, with practice, their
tendrils have the abilty to control the hair and use them as wings to fly.
There are other uses as well but the tendrils primary function is feeding on
souls, this is where my version of ‘killing’ humans comes in.
After
a siren…umm…seduces their chosen human, the siren uses their tendrils to suck
out their victim’s soul from behind the neck at the base of the skull. This
does not kill the human, at least not directly. Depending on the human, they
deal with their lack of soul differently, go insane, do nothing (not even eat
or sleep) or (the most common) commit suicide.
Yeah,
they’re pretty dangerous when they need to feed.
There
a lot more to them then just soul sucking machines, like why are they mostly
female? Why is Stefan an exemption? Why do they feed on souls? Where did they
come from in the first place?
All
those answers are in the book as you will get to know plenty of sirens, not
just Stefan. I hope you all get to love (and in some cases, love to hate) them
just as much as I do.
