THESE STRANGE TIMES

And here I thought that this title would belong in a work of fiction, probably a Sci-fi… and yet, in this year of 2020, these are truly strange times.

Before I get into it, I would first like to say thank you to all the keyworkers out there. From all the NHS staff (and their equivalents around the world) working hard in saving lives on the frontline to the supermarket cashiers, doing their best to keep some form of normality during these times.

Right, back to the blog. I, like everyone else in the UK, is currently self-isolating and like any introvert, we have a treasure trove of things to help us pass the time. Of course I do the usual writing, both editing my second book and completing my third, but I’m also a gamer (I know, how millennial of me) and there’s one game that I’ve been addicted to/has been keeping me sane. Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch.

Now this blog is going to turn into a game review of sort from here on out, so I won’t blame you if you want to stop reading if you’re not a gamer. As for the gamers, let us proceed.

Now I know that I am far from the first gamer to sing ACNH’s praises, but it is well deserved and its timing was perfect given the current times we live in. When most of our normal activities have been stripped away from us, ACNH provides us with a way to occupy our minds with easy but satisfying tasks, from watering flowers, to fishing, to catching bugs and much more.

Since we are all social distancing, the cute little villagers that can become your neighbours in the game is very much welcome and makes the whole experience a little less lonely. It also brings other players together, whether it’s literally by visiting each other’s islands or via social media with memes and discussions abound. As for the best villager, it’s Bob the lazy purple cat (don’t at me).

The name of my island is Evegreen and there’s a story behind that. Anyone who has read my book knows that Evegreen is the name of the town that is also know as a safe haven for anyone needing a safe place to live. The name Evegreen actually came up because of my first ever experience with Animal Crossing back on GameCube. At the time, I was going to name my town Evergreen (I was a little un-original as back then) but as fate would have it, there was a character limit of eight letter, so instead, I simply took out the r. I can’t remember if I made a big deal about it at the time but it always stuck with me and not only did all the Animal Crossing towns in the future keep the name, but it also became a staple town in my books.
