WORLD BUILDING

Oh boy, I love world building.

World building is basically when you write up all the facts and lore about the universe that you have created for your stories. This can be used for pretty much all genres…well all fictional genres anyway though I believe that non-fiction writer have their own set of notes that they write up for reference.

The world that my characters inhabit is called Astrasu (pronounced as-stra-zoo), a planet that is riddled with magical potential. As it currently stands, no-one that reads my book know much about Astrasu’s history. Unbound has some lore sprinkled in (mostly revolving around sirens) but I plan to spread out the lore over time.

Getting back on track, I often scribbled down notes when I think of new ideas about my fictional universe, whether it has anything to do with my current writing project or not. It can be anything from a new development in one of the many stories to random ideas about places or people in the Astrasu universe.

What I really like doing though is writing ‘facts’ about my fictional universe. Details of the different races, important notes on characters (and some unimportant notes), maps and diagrams of the world itself, the list goes on and on.

I write A LOT of world building stuff, so much so that I have loads of scrap paper with a variety of notes that I have scribbled on anything I could find at the time. It’s amazing that I haven’t resorted to napkins or paper towels, not that I’m oppose to it if it’s the only thing available. I used to carry around a small notebook but I’ve recently got into the habit of making notes on my mobile and then write them down later on.

My notes aren’t limited to writing facts, I have also been known to draw some ideas as well. I’m not talking about drawing my characters (though that is a thing I do too), it’s more like doodling when I get a concept in my mind. For example, I once had an interesting idea for a city set in a frozen wasteland and for some reason, I just start scribbling it…with a pen! I also did the same thing when I had the inspiration to try and draw Astrasu’s world map. While the map is still a pretty rough draft, I still think it’s a good start and I look forward to expanding on it.

In a nutshell, I enjoy world building and I still have lots of notes to make…now if only I could keep my notes organised…
